WINPACCS: Interview: Insights into the WINPACCS APIs

In a recent conversation, David Weber, WINPACCS Junior Consultant, spoke with Jan Benold, Head of WINPACCS Development. In the interview, he explains why the WINPACCS APIs represent an important step for the future of WINPACCS and highlights the key benefits they offer to users.

The Foundation Behind the New WINPACCS APIs

David Weber: Jan, the development team has been working intensively on the new WINPACCS APIs in recent months. What exactly are they, and why has WINPACCS chosen to use REST APIs?

Jan Benold: REST APIs are standardised interfaces that allow different systems to exchange clearly defined information and data over the internet. They follow established technical standards and enable structured and reliable communication between applications.

With the new WINPACCS APIs, we have created a standardised interface that enables data exchange between WINPACCS and other systems. Through these modern web APIs, selected data can be retrieved from WINPACCS and, in certain scenarios, securely transferred to WINPACCS. This creates a future-proof foundation for integrations and opens up new opportunities for our customers to incorporate WINPACCS into their existing processes and IT landscapes.

Today, REST APIs have become the industry standard because they are flexible, scalable and technology-independent. They also integrate seamlessly into modern web and cloud architectures. For us, it was therefore a natural choice to adopt this widely accepted standard for WINPACCS as well.

Enabling Seamless Integration and Data Exchange

David Weber: What role do the new APIs play in integrating WINPACCS into existing system landscapes, and what specific benefits do they offer customers?

Jan Benold: They play a very important role. There are a number of scenarios, particularly in the financial sector, where it can be extremely useful to display and process data in other systems, such as a company's financial accounting software or business intelligence solutions.

We want to provide our customers with a simple and standardised way to access selected WINPACCS data for exactly these purposes. For our users, the main advantage is that selected data can be securely and conveniently retrieved from WINPACCS or transferred to WINPACCS using modern technology. This makes it possible, for example, to connect corporate financial accounting systems or BI solutions with WINPACCS.

From Development to Innovation

David Weber: How is API expertise developing within the team, and what did you enjoy most about implementing the WINPACCS APIs?

Jan Benold: Our development team already had extensive experience with REST APIs. However, the intensive development phase of the new WINPACCS APIs allowed us to deepen this expertise even further and share it more broadly across the team. One of the most valuable aspects was the close collaboration within the development team. The continuous exchange of knowledge and the joint work on complex functional requirements not only led to a strong result but was also highly rewarding and enjoyable.

Jan Benold: The next topics are already in the pipeline. Together with our customers, we continuously develop WINPACCS and adapt the software to meet new requirements. This regularly gives rise to exciting topics and new ideas. At this year's Customer Day and Symposium, we will once again present a number of interesting innovations.
